Efficient and thorough medicals for immigration

A medical check is an important part of your application to Immigration New Zealand for a visa or residency.

Our clinic is an Approved Panel Physician for Immigration New Zealand, meaning our doctors have extensive knowledge of the relevant procedures and regulations and can carry out authorised medical checks as part of your application.

We know that relocating to a new country and completing immigration requirements can often be a daunting and stressful process. Our team is here to make your immigration medical examination as comfortable as possible. We offer support throughout the examination process and welcome the presence of a support person or interpreter if you choose to have one.

Our prompt reporting of examination results to both you and INZ enables efficient processing of your immigration application.

To schedule an immigration medical you simply need to complete the booking form and one of our team will be in touch to organise your appointment. If you are applying as a family or group, please ensure you complete a booking form for every person who requires a medical and ensure all fields have been completed.

Medicals for employment or driver licensing or diving

You may need to undertake a pre-employment medical for your employer. The primary purpose of a pre-employment medical is to assess the candidate's overall health and identify any existing medical conditions that may affect their ability to perform the job. Contact us if you have any questions and to book your medical.

Depending on your situation you may need to undertake a medical to get or renew your driver's licence. This can be required for people on certain classes of licence, older drivers and people with long-term medical conditions. Our team can book and carry out your medical promptly to help you obtain the certification you need. Please contact us to book an appointment.

We also offer both recreational and commercial dive medicals, performed by a designated dive doctor. The charges for these are: Recreational - $120, and Commercial - $326. Being fit to dive is not just important for your own safety, but also for the safety of your buddy and your instructor. You can find out more information here, and please contact us to book an appointment.

More information about immigration and pre-employment medicals

When you come in for your medical appointment, the receptionist will give you an INZ eMedical declaration to read and sign. If you are under 18 years of age, a parent/guardian must sign on your behalf. The receptionist will then take a digital photo of you, similar to a passport photo, and upload it to your eMedical case. You will then see the doctor who will ask you about your health and medical history. The doctor will also do a physical examination, checking your heart, lungs and abdomen. A chaperone is available if required. You will also be asked to provide a urine sample.

You will need to bring:
  • Your passport
  • Glasses (if you wear glasses)
  • Previous medication details and medical history details
You may also bring a support person or interpreter with you if you feel this will make it easier

Following your medical with the doctor, you will be required to have blood tests. Blood tests are non-fasting, so you may eat prior to having the test.

You will be given a blood test referral form to take to Awanui Labs, located next door to Dunedin Urgent Doctors. You must also take your passport with you. You will pay Southern Community Laboratories directly for your Blood tests. Charges will vary depending on which tests are required.

Awanui Labs would prefer patients make an appointment for immigration blood tests. Click here to make an appointment.

If you require a chest X-ray as part of your medical, you must take it at Pacific Radiology, Consultancy House, 7 Bond Street, Dunedin. You will be given an X-ray referral form and Tracking Sheet to take to your appointment. You must also take your passport with you. If you are organising the appointment on the same day as your medical check please make it for at least 2 hours after your medical appointment time at Dunedin Urgent Doctors.

If you only need to have a chest x-ray taken (no medical required), your referral needs to be set up by a Panel Physician Clinic on eMedical. Please email your passport photo page to immigration@urgentdocs.co.nz and one of our staff will contact you directly to organise a time to do this. You will need to bring your passport with you. It should take around 20-30mins to complete the referral. You are not required to see the doctor for this. Once the details are loaded into eMedical, you may proceed to make an appointment with Pacific Radiology for your X-ray.

You will pay Pacific Radiology directly for the X-ray. Pacific Radiology will upload the radiology report to your eMedical case.

After you have had your blood tests and chest X-ray (if applicable) the doctor will check the results (approx. 2 – 5 days later). If any of the results are abnormal the doctor will contact you with further information. You may be required to have further tests or be referred to a specialist.

If the results are normal, the medical will then be submitted to INZ via the eMedical system and you will receive an e-notification from INZ that it has been received.

You do not need to return to the Dunedin Urgent Doctors to get your results. We will send you a copy of your results for your own records.
We are now open 24 hours a day.  Between 10pm and 8am the clinic is staffed by registered nurses, paramedics, and extended care paramedics with telemedicine support
