Efficient and thorough medicals for immigration

A medical check is an important part of your visa or residency application to Immigration New Zealand (INZ). Our clinic is an Approved Panel Physician, meaning our doctors are authorised to carry out the required medical checks and have experience with INZ procedures.
We aim to make your examination as comfortable as possible and can accommodate a support person or interpreter, if needed. Examination results are reported promptly to both you and INZ to help keep your application on track.
To book an immigration medical, please complete our online booking form. If applying as a family or group, please submit a form for each person. When completing the form, please ensure all fields are completed.

Medicals for employment, diving, or driver licensing

Pre-employment medicals assess your overall health and identify any conditions that may affect your ability to perform a job.
Driver medicals may be required for certain licence classes, older drivers, or people with long-term medical conditions. Our team can carry out these medicals promptly to help you obtain or renew your certification.
Dive medicals are available for recreational and commercial divers, performed by a designated dive doctor. Being fit to dive is important for your safety and that of others.
For all services, you need contact us to book an appointment or ask questions about which medical you need.
All medicals are by appointment only, and never available as a walk-in service.

Frequently asked Questions

When you come in for your medical appointment, the receptionist will give you an INZ eMedical declaration to read and sign. If you are under 18 years of age, a parent/guardian must sign on your behalf. The receptionist will then take a digital photo of you, similar to a passport photo, and upload it to your eMedical case. You will then see the doctor who will ask you about your health and medical history. The doctor will also do a physical examination, checking your heart, lungs and abdomen. A chaperone is available if required. You will also be asked to provide a urine sample.

You will need to bring:
• Your passport
• Glasses (if you wear them)
• Details of your current medications and relevant medical history
You are also welcome to bring a support person or interpreter, if you wish.

Following your medical with the doctor, you will be required to have blood tests. Blood tests are non-fasting, so you may eat prior to having the test.

You will be given a blood test referral form to take to Awanui Labs, located next door to Dunedin Urgent Doctors. You must also take your passport with you. You will pay Southern Community Laboratories directly for your Blood tests. Charges will vary depending on which tests are required.

Awanui Labs would prefer patients make an appointment for immigration blood tests. Click here to make an appointment.

If you require a chest X-ray as part of your medical, this will be at Pacific Radiology. We will help you to organise this.

You will be given an X-ray referral form and Tracking Sheet to take to your appointment. You must also take your passport with you.

If you are organising the appointment on the same day as your medical check please make it for at least 2 hours after your medical appointment time at Dunedin Urgent Doctors.

If you only need a chest X-ray (and not a full medical) your referral must still be arranged by a Panel Physician Clinic via eMedical. Please email a photo of your passport photo page to immigration@urgentdocs.co.nz, and a staff member will contact you to organise the referral. You will need to bring your passport with you. The referral process should take approximately 20 - 30 minutes, and you do not need to see a doctor. Once your referral details are loaded into eMedical, you may proceed to book your X-ray directly with Pacific Radiology.

You will pay Pacific Radiology directly for the X-ray. Pacific Radiology will upload the radiology report to your eMedical case.

After your blood tests and chest X-ray (if required), the doctor will review your results. This is normally within 5 days. If any follow-up or further information is needed, the doctor will contact you with instructions. At times, this may include additional tests or a referral to a specialist.

Once your medical is complete, it will be submitted to Immigration New Zealand (INZ) via eMedical, and you will receive an e-notification from INZ confirming receipt.

You do not need to return to Dunedin Urgent Doctors to receive your results. We will also provide you with a copy for your own records.

We are now open 24 hours a day.  Between 10pm and 8am the clinic is staffed by registered nurses, paramedics, and extended care paramedics with telemedicine support
